South Korea co-hosted the 2002 FIFA World Cup alongside Japan — the first time the tournament had been held in Asia, and the first co-hosted edition in the competition's history. The Korean national team's run to the semi-finals, eliminating Spain and Italy along the way amid considerable refereeing controversy, made the tournament one of the most politically charged in modern football history. This issue was struck to coincide with that moment.
KM#100 is one of several silver pieces the Bank of Korea released in the lead-up to June 2002, with distribution handled partly through official souvenir channels at match venues.
