The 1993 Daejeon Expo — officially Daejeon International Exposition — ran from August through November of that year under the theme "The Challenge of a New Road of Development," making it the first world's fair held in Korea. South Korea had been aggressively pursuing international prestige events since the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and the Expo was a deliberate continuation of that strategy. Over 108 countries participated, with attendance exceeding 14 million visitors.
KM#81 is one of several commemorative denominations issued for the event, with the 10,000 Won silver pieces primarily absorbed by collectors rather than circulation.
