| Obverse description | The Republic of Korea coat of arms — comprising the circular Taeguk symbol within a stylised floral rosette — is displayed prominently in the upper centre of the field, with a scroll below bearing the Hangul inscription 대한민국. A decorative spray of Hibiscus syriacus (Rose of Sharon), the national flower of Korea, fills the lower portion of the field with multiple blooms and buds rendered in high relief. A circular legend in Hangul runs along the upper periphery, while the denomination in Hangul and the issue year 1986 appear along the lower rim. |

Issued for the 10th Asian Games held in Seoul in 1986, this coin was part of South Korea's broader strategy of numismatic promotion ahead of the 1988 Seoul Olympics — the Games functioned as a rehearsal, both logistically and in terms of the commemorative coin programs the Bank of Korea was learning to execute at scale for an international audience.
KM#56 is one of several denominations in the 1986 Asian Games series, each assigned a specific athletic subject.
