Issued to commemorate the 1988 Seoul Olympics — the first Games held on Korean soil and a moment of enormous political weight, coming just decades after the Korean War had left Seoul in ruins. South Korea used the Games aggressively as a showcase of economic modernization, and the commemorative coin program was extensive, spanning dozens of types across gold and silver.
KM#76 is one of several cycling-themed issues from this series, struck in .925 silver to international bullion coin specifications then common for Olympic commemoratives.
