Issued to mark the 1984 papal visit to Korea — the first ever by a sitting pope — this coin commemorates John Paul II's trip to Seoul for the beatification of 93 Korean martyrs and 10 French missionary priests, all killed during the Catholic persecutions of the 19th century. The beatification ceremony itself drew an estimated 300,000 people to Yeouido Plaza.
