| Obverse description | Central bust portrait of An Jung-geun (안중근), the Korean independence activist and martyr, facing slightly left, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field. To the left of the portrait, a vertical Hanja inscription reads 大韓國人 ('Great Korean'), accompanied by his personal seal below. The circular legend in Hangul reads 광복 50 주년기념 ('50th Anniversary of Liberation') around the upper periphery. Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule on August 15, 1945, this coin appeared during a period of intense national reflection — 1995 saw extensive government-led commemorations, public debate over Japanese wartime conduct, and renewed diplomatic friction over unresolved reparations claims. The Bank of Korea produced a limited commemorative series for the occasion rather than a single piece, of which KM#86 is one component.
