The 1983 10,000 Won note falls within South Korea's period of rapid economic expansion, but what makes this specific issue worth noting is its place in the evolution of the 10,000 Won denomination itself — the highest face value in Korean circulation at the time, and one that had only been introduced in 1973 to keep pace with sustained inflation through the 1970s oil shocks.
Production by the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation in Daejeon meant fully domestic manufacture, a point of deliberate policy after earlier high-denomination notes had relied on foreign printers. The watermark remains the sole listed security feature — modest by later standards.
