Obverse description Central design features the national coat of arms of Vanuatu, depicting a traditionally attired warrior standing upon a boar's tusk and fern fronds, holding a spear upright in his right hand, within a circular design element. A banner below bears the motto LONG GOD YUMI STANAP in the field. The date 30th JULY and 1981 appear to either side of the central device. The circumferential legend TO COMMEMORATE THE 1st. ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE arcs around the upper field, with VANUATU inscribed in large letters along the lower border.

Reverse description Central design presents a naturalistic scene of a coconut crab (Birgus latro) posed with claws raised on a sandy beach between two small tropical islets, each planted with palm trees, surrounded by rippling ocean waves rendered in fine relief against a mirror-polished field. The denomination DIX MILLE VATU arcs along the upper legend, with the numeral 10.000 immediately below. The scientific name BIRGUS LATRO is inscribed in small letters beneath the central device, and the date 1981 appears prominently in the lower field.
