Japan's 10,000 yen commemorative for the Tokyo 2020 Games was issued by the Bank of Japan as a legal tender note, not a collector-only certificate — it entered general circulation alongside standard series notes. The timing proved awkward: the Games themselves were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning the commemorative's stated year never matched the actual event year on the calendars of the public receiving it.
Production used the same high-security substrate and intaglio printing processes as regular issue 10,000 yen notes, with no degradation in anti-counterfeiting specification despite the commemorative status.
