Mongolia issued this kilo silver piece in 1996 as part of a broader push by post-Soviet Mongolian institutions to generate hard currency through numismatic exports — a strategy common among newly independent states in the 1990s that relied heavily on Western coin dealers and collectors rather than domestic demand. The Przewalski's horse, the subject here, had been declared extinct in the wild by the early 1970s; reintroduction programs, partly coordinated through Mongolian and Dutch conservation efforts, had only just begun returning captive-bred animals to the Mongolian steppe in the mid-1990s, giving the coin a precise political and ecological moment.
