Additional information

Ögedei Khan, son of Genghis and second Great Khan of the Mongol Empire, oversaw the conquest of the Jin dynasty, the destruction of Kiev in 1240, and Mongol forces pushing as far west as the Adriatic — before his death in 1241 halted an invasion of Western Europe that contemporaries in Poland and Hungary had every reason to believe unstoppable. The Bank of Mongolia has issued numerous silver commemoratives in this format honoring figures from the imperial period, this being among the more historically significant subjects in that ongoing program.
