Uganda's large-format silver issues of the early 1990s were produced under contract by foreign minting houses during a period when the Bank of Uganda lacked the infrastructure for domestic production at this scale. The shilling itself had been redenominated in 1987 after years of inflation tied to the economic devastation of the Obote and Amin regimes — a 10,000 shilling face value on a bullion piece was nominally enormous but practically meaningless against the metal content.
The kilogram format places this among the heaviest standard-issue silver coins of the decade. KM#37 has a small-type counterpart struck the same year, distinguished by die size rather than weight.
