Issued to mark the 60th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, this is one of the largest gold coins ever produced by the Russian state mint — Goznak. At just over a kilogram of fine gold, it belongs to a short series of ultra-high-denomination Russian commemoratives that are effectively bullion objects masquerading as legal tender, with face values bearing no relationship to intrinsic worth. The 10,000-rouble denomination was nominal; no circulation was ever intended or possible.
Mintages for these Goznak kilogram issues are typically in the low hundreds at most, and the 2005 Victory series was produced under a government mandate to commemorate a politically significant jubilee — the 60th anniversary being treated with particular ceremony under Putin's administration.
