The Brunei Monetary Board maintained a strict one-to-one interchangeability arrangement with the Singapore dollar, a Currency Interchangeability Agreement dating to 1967 that remains in force, which meant notes of this size had real cross-border utility among financial institutions in both territories.
Thomas De La Rue's production for Brunei in this period relied on relatively conservative security architecture by the standards of high-denomination work — the watermark being the primary deterrent.
