Cambodia's 10,000 riel notes of this series were issued across a five-year window as the National Bank worked to stabilize confidence in the riel against persistent dollarization — by 2001, the US dollar handled the overwhelming majority of urban transactions, and high-denomination riel notes were used almost exclusively for rural trade and government payments where dollars were less available.
