| Obverse description | A large vignette of an Embera indigenous woman occupies the right portion of the note, accompanied by a small gold pre-Columbian sculpture at her side. The centre carries the bank title, denomination, and commemorative inscriptions, with two authorising signatures superimposed over a circular vignette of Columbus's fleet. The left field contains the watermark zone, with red serial numbers appearing both above the watermark area and in larger format below the portrait. |

Colombia's Imprenta de Billetes had been printing the country's currency in-house since the 1950s, but this commemorative issue marked one of the facility's more ambitious undertakings — a note timed to the quincentenary of Columbus's 1492 voyage, a date that carried genuine political weight across Latin America in the early 1990s, splitting opinion between celebration and protest in roughly equal measure.
Pick 437A is the first signature variety of the series; a second followed. Watermark security only, no security thread — relatively light for a 10,000-peso denomination by that period's standards.
