Mexico's inflation through the 1980s was severe enough that this 10,000 peso note — a denomination that would have been unthinkable a decade earlier — became routine pocket change before the series was retired. The country's consumer price index rose over 3,000 percent between 1982 and 1988, compressing the purchasing power of high-denomination notes almost as fast as they could be printed.
Banco de México operated its own printing works, which handled production in-house rather than contracting abroad as many Latin American central banks did. The P#88b designation distinguishes a signature variety within the broader 1983–1987 run — the specific signing officials are the reliable differentiator between sub-types in this series.
