Guinea-Bissau issued a run of commemorative silver pieces in the early 1990s tied to major international sporting events — an unusual move for a country that had only introduced the peso as its currency in 1975 following independence from Portugal. The 1994 World Cup series, of which this is a part, was produced well ahead of the tournament and distributed almost entirely through the collector market rather than domestic circulation.

The Banco Nacional da Guiné-Bissau had limited minting infrastructure of its own; these pieces were struck under contract at foreign facilities.
