This piece was struck to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Columbus's 1492 voyage, part of a broader Spanish state program that consumed significant mint resources throughout the early 1990s in preparation for 1992. Cuauhtémoc — the last Aztec emperor, captured and tortured by Cortés in 1521, executed in 1525 — was a pointed inclusion in a commemorative series ostensibly celebrating the conquest era, reflecting a political effort to acknowledge indigenous history rather than frame 1492 as simple triumph.
