The 10,000 peseta denomination was the highest value circulating note Spain had issued up to that point, introduced partly in response to years of inflation that had eroded the purchasing power of lower denominations. Mariano Rubio Jiménez, whose signature appears here as Governor, would later become one of the more controversial figures in Spanish banking history — he was convicted in 1994 for tax fraud and concealing assets, a significant scandal for the institution.
Pick 161 is notably scarce in genuinely circulated grades; the high face value meant most examples passed through few hands before being deposited or exchanged.
