San Marino hosted the 87th World Congress of International Chambers of Commerce in 2001, one of the few occasions the tiny republic served as venue for a major intergovernmental commercial forum. The congress brought together trade delegations from over 130 countries — logistically improbable for a landlocked microstate of 61 square kilometers entirely surrounded by Italy.
The .835 fineness is characteristic of San Marino's commemorative output from this period, matching the silver standard used across several concurrent issues rather than the higher .925 more common in other European commemoratives.
