Mehmed Akif Ersoy wrote the Turkish national anthem — the İstiklâl Marşı — in 1921 under considerable pressure, completing it in just two days after dozens of other submissions were rejected by the Grand National Assembly. He refused all payment for it and, in a decision that has never been reversed, stipulated that he would never accept royalties. He spent his final years in Egypt, returning to Turkey only in 1936 when terminally ill with cirrhosis, dying in Istanbul that December.
This commemorative was issued fifty years after his death.
