By the mid-1990s, Turkish inflation had grown so unmanageable that the 10,000 Lira coin — worth roughly a U.S. penny at issue — was already obsolescent before its seven-year run ended. The Central Bank of Turkey's cumulative inflation rate across the 1990s exceeded 1,000%, steadily eroding whatever transactional utility the denomination retained.
The series was ultimately rendered obsolete by the 2005 redenomination, which introduced the New Turkish Lira at a conversion rate of 1,000,000 old Lira to one new unit.
