He is shown in the act of casting his high-seat pillars (öndvegissúlur) into the sea, following the Norse tradition of allowing the gods to determine the site of settlement. Issued to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Iceland's settlement, traditionally dated to 874 AD when Ingólfr Arnarson established his farmstead at Reykjavík. The Central Bank produced this as part of a coordinated series of commemorative gold and silver pieces — Iceland's first domestically issued gold coinage since independence, and one of the few gold emissions the republic has ever authorized.
Mintages were tightly controlled and the pieces saw no circulation.
