| Opmerkingen |
When the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed in late 1918, its successor states faced an immediate practical problem: the old imperial banknotes circulated freely across multiple new national borders, making monetary separation impossible without a physical intervention. Austria's solution was to overstamp existing Oesterreichisch-ungarische Bank notes with a violet stamp, effectively converting them into Austrian-only currency and excluding non-stamped notes from legal tender status within the new republic.
The underlying note is the large-format 10,000 Kronen issue of the old joint bank. The overprint procedure was rushed, and counterfeit stamps appeared quickly — a known problem with this series that affected several denominations simultaneously.
