The Oesterreichisch-ungarische Bank issued this note in the final weeks of its institutional existence — the bank was liquidated by the successor states of the former Habsburg monarchy following the 1918 armistice, and the 10,000 Kronen denomination was among the last emissions it authorized. Austria stamped these notes with the Deutschösterreich overprint in 1919 to separate its circulating currency from that of Hungary and the other successor states, a process driven by the urgent need to prevent cross-border currency dumping.
Unstamped examples remained technically valid in multiple successor states briefly, creating genuine arbitrage opportunities before each government moved to enforce its own overprint requirements.
