The Golden Bull of Sicily was issued by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II in 1212, granting Bohemian kings the right to determine their own succession without imperial interference — one of the most significant constitutional concessions extracted from any medieval emperor. The 800th anniversary of that document prompted this issue. Frederick had been in a desperate position, competing against Otto IV for the imperial throne, and Bohemian military support was worth paying for in privileges.
The .9999 fineness is notable; most Czech National Bank gold commemoratives of this period were struck at .9999 rather than the more common .999, placing them among the purest bullion-grade commemoratives in the series.
