Additional information

Savang Vatthana's coronation in 1971 was a ceremony long overdue — he had technically ascended the throne in 1959 following his father Sisavang Vong's death, but formal coronation was repeatedly deferred as the Pathet Lao insurgency and the widening American war in Indochina made such ceremonies politically fraught. By 1971, with the country nominally stabilized under the Vientiane Accords framework, the Royal Lao Government moved forward. It would prove to be the last coronation in Laotian history.

Savang Vatthana abdicated in 1975 under Communist pressure and died in a re-education camp, likely around 1978 or 1984 — the exact date remains unconfirmed by Vientiane.
