Mazu — the Chinese sea goddess venerated across coastal Fujian, Taiwan, and the broader diaspora — has essentially no historical connection to landlocked Laos. This coin belongs to a category of Lao bullion issues from the mid-2000s produced almost entirely for export to collectors in East Asia, particularly the Chinese market, with the Bank of the Lao PDR lending its issuing authority to themes that would sell abroad rather than circulate domestically.
