Guinea has become one of the more prolific issuers of large-format silver novelty pieces marketed primarily to European collectors, a revenue stream that bears no relationship to domestic monetary use. This 1-kilogram issue belongs squarely to that commercial category, produced under licensing arrangements that allow the Guinean government to monetize foreign cultural figures it has no historical connection to.
Grace Kelly died in Monaco in September 1982 following a stroke while driving on the Corniche road above Monte Carlo. The coin's legal-tender status under Guinean law is nominal.
