Burkina Faso has issued commemorative coinage through external minting arrangements — typically via the Monnaie de Paris or private European mints — that bear no practical relationship to the CFA franc as a circulating currency. This kilo silver format exists purely as a collector vehicle. Pius X died on August 20, 1914, just weeks after the outbreak of World War I, having reportedly said the conflict broke his heart; the centenary of that death is the occasion this coin marks. He was canonized by Pius XII in 1954.
