Gnassingbé Eyadéma seized power in Togo in January 1967 in the country's first military coup, later cultivating one of West Africa's most elaborate personality cults — state-issued imagery of him appeared on watches, clothing, and coinage alike. This piedfort, struck at nearly 100 grams of sterling silver, was produced for the collector market rather than circulation, likely commissioned through the BCEAO's arrangement with a European striking facility. Piedforts of BCEAO-zone commemoratives from this period are notoriously difficult to attribute precisely, and KM#Pn3a reflects the catalog's own uncertainty about the full striking details.
