| Additional information |
Gnassingbé Eyadéma seized power in Togo in January 1967 — the first successful military coup in sub-Saharan Africa's post-independence history — and spent the following decade constructing an elaborate personality cult around himself. This issue belongs to a series of high-denomination silver pieces produced in the late 1970s largely for the international collector market rather than domestic circulation; Togo's actual monetary economy ran on far smaller CFA denominations.
KM#E11 carries an "E" prefix denoting essai status in the Krause classification — a pattern or trial piece struck in limited numbers outside the regular issue sequence.
