Jean-Bédel Bokassa proclaimed himself Emperor of the Central African Empire in December 1977, staging a coronation that cost an estimated $30 million — roughly a third of the country's annual budget, partly financed by France. This essai was produced in anticipation of the new imperial coinage that would never reach circulation. French paratroopers deposed Bokassa in September 1979 during Operation Barracuda, and the empire was dissolved almost immediately, leaving a handful of trial pieces as the only physical evidence that an imperial coinage program was ever seriously pursued.
