The Black Mamba issue is part of BEAC's ongoing wildlife bullion program, through which the six member states of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community — Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and the Republic of the Congo — collectively authorize commemorative issues despite having no domestic precious-metal minting infrastructure. The coins are produced by private European minting houses under license, a arrangement that has drawn quiet criticism from economists who note the irony of a currency union issuing silver collectibles priced far beyond the monthly wage of most citizens in its member states.
The Black Mamba (*Dendroaspis polylepis*) is native to sub-Saharan Africa and is documented across several BEAC member territories.
