The Azure Dragon is one of the Four Symbols of Chinese astronomy, governing the east and the spring season — a subject with no particular connection to the six BEAC member states of central Africa. Coins like this one are struck purely for the numismatic export market, using the BEAC's issuing authority as a legal vehicle while targeting collectors in East Asia and Europe. The copper core beneath the silver cladding accounts for the coin's substantial heft without the cost of a solid two-ounce silver strike.
