The Central African Republic gained independence from France in August 1960, and by 1970 was under the rule of Jean-Bédel Bokassa, who had seized power in a coup four years earlier. This issue commemorates the 25th anniversary of the United Nations — a body Bokassa would grow increasingly hostile toward as his regime descended into brutality through the decade. The CAR's gold commemorative program of this period was aimed squarely at collectors rather than circulation, produced in limited quantities for the international numismatic market.
