Chad's independence anniversary gold issues of 1970 were part of a broader wave of commemorative coinage produced by former French Equatorial Africa territories in the years following decolonization, many struck at the Paris Mint under technical and financial arrangements that effectively continued French monetary influence long after the political break. The 10,000-franc denomination placed this piece well beyond the reach of ordinary Chadians — per capita income that year was under $70 USD.
Mintage was extremely limited, aimed squarely at the international collector market rather than domestic circulation.
