Kőszeg's castle earned its place in Hungarian national memory from the 1532 siege, when a Croatian-Hungarian garrison of perhaps 700–800 men under Captain Nikola Jurišić held off the advance guard of Suleiman the Great's Ottoman army for nearly three weeks. The delay — though the castle ultimately surrendered under negotiated terms — is credited with preventing a full Ottoman assault on Vienna that campaign season.
The Magyar Nemzeti Bank has issued regional castle series commemoratives with some regularity; this piece belongs to that ongoing program celebrating fortifications tied to moments of particular historical weight.
