This piece commemorates Károly Róbert — Charles I of Hungary — whose monetary reform of the 1320s introduced the first Hungarian gold florin, itself modeled directly on the Florentine fiorino d'oro. That reform broke the crown's dependence on the debasement-prone silver denár system and established Hungary as a major gold currency power, largely on the back of the Kremnica mines, which by the mid-14th century were producing an estimated one-third of Europe's entire gold output.
The .986 fineness deliberately echoes the original medieval florin's purity specification.
