The Hungarian Royal Geological Institute, founded in 1869, was among the first state geological survey bodies in Europe and spent decades mapping the Carpathian Basin's complex stratigraphy. Its Budapest headquarters, completed in 1899 to a design by Ödön Lechner, is considered one of the masterworks of Hungarian Art Nouveau — the building itself has been a protected monument since 1951.
This issue marks the institute's 150th anniversary.
