Equatorial Guinea's run of international commemorative gold issues in the late 1970s was less a product of domestic numismatic culture than of foreign licensing arrangements — private minting firms marketed these coins to collectors worldwide, with the issuing government receiving a fee. The 1978 World Cup series was produced after the tournament had already concluded, a common practice for this type of issue.
The country had no meaningful connection to the Argentina tournament; no Equatoguinean side participated or qualified.
