Hakob Gurjian (1881–1948) spent much of his career in Constantinople and later Paris before the Soviet period drew Armenian cultural figures back into an orbit of state-sanctioned recognition. This coin belongs to Armenia's ongoing commemorative series honoring figures of the Armenian artistic diaspora — a program that accelerated sharply after independence as the Central Bank worked to reclaim cultural figures previously appropriated by Soviet iconography.
Struck at 900 fine, the issue shares its gold specification with several other Armenian commemoratives of the mid-2000s, all produced in limited quantities for the collector market rather than circulation.
