Armenia established its national army on January 28, 1992, just weeks after the Soviet Union's formal dissolution and in the middle of a shooting war over Nagorno-Karabakh that had already been escalating for four years. The timing of that founding — creating a military institution while simultaneously fighting a territorial conflict — shaped the army's character in ways that distinguish it from most post-Soviet successor forces.
