Issued to mark the 1,600th anniversary of the Armenian alphabet, created by the monk Mesrop Mashtots around 405 AD. The alphabet's invention was a deliberate act of cultural resistance — Mashtots designed it specifically to translate Christian scripture and sever Armenian literary life from Greek and Syriac ecclesiastical dominance. The Central Bank released this gold piece as part of a broader commemorative program that included silver issues at lower face values.
