Alexander Mantashian (Mantashev) built one of the largest oil fortunes in the Russian Empire through his Baku operations in the late 19th century, at one point controlling a significant share of the region's pipeline infrastructure and outcompeting foreign rivals including the Rothschilds. His wealth funded Armenian schools, churches, and cultural institutions across the diaspora — a deliberate philanthropic program rather than incidental charity.
Armenia's gold commemorative series honoring such figures is struck in limited quantities by foreign minting partners, as the Central Bank of Armenia does not operate its own production facility.
