Iraq's shift to hybrid substrate for this denomination was driven largely by durability concerns in a country where climate and handling conditions degrade standard cotton-paper notes unusually fast. The polymer-cotton composite used here is not full polymer — it was a transitional choice, and the Central Bank has issued both substrate types across its post-2003 series depending on denomination and print run.
The P#101 series ran across seven years of considerable political and economic turbulence, including the period of ISIS territorial control over large parts of northern and western Iraq, during which the Central Bank maintained uninterrupted note issuance from Baghdad.
