Obverse description A portrait vignette of Saddam Hussein (1937–2006) occupies the right portion of the face, set against a guilloche underprint with geometric patterning. To the left, a vignette of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Baghdad is rendered in fine line engraving. The denomination and issuing authority appear in Arabic script, with the year given in both Hijri (1423) and Gregorian (2002) calendars.

Reverse description The central vignette presents Al-Mustansiriya School (Madrasa al-Mustansiriyya) in Baghdad, one of the oldest universities in the world, rendered in detailed line work. The dome and minaret of Al-Asifyah Mosque are visible in the composition. To one side, an Arabic astrolabe is illustrated as a secondary design element, accompanied by bilingual inscriptions identifying the denomination and issuing authority.
