Additional information

The Sinjska alka is a lance-throwing tournament held annually in Sinj, Croatia, since 1715 — originally commemorating a Dalmatian militia victory over Ottoman forces that year. Yugoslavia issued this gold piece as part of a broader series celebrating domestic cultural traditions, a politically useful exercise in projecting pan-Yugoslav identity during the mid-1980s as federal tensions were quietly escalating following Tito's death in 1980.

The alka tournament itself was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2010, long after this coin's issue.
