Bosnia struck this coin in 1994 while Sarajevo was still under siege — the longest siege of a capital city in modern warfare. The National Bank had been established only the previous year amid active conflict, and these gold issues were almost certainly produced under contract at a foreign mint rather than domestically. They functioned primarily as hard-currency instruments for international sale rather than anything approaching domestic circulation.
KM#31 is among the earliest gold issues attributed to the independent Bosnian state.
